What is mumps?

Mumps is a contagious viral infection. It mainly affects the salivary glands near the ears. In one or both glands, mumps can induce swelling.

What causes mumps?

Mumps is caused by the mumps virus (MuV).

What are signs and symptoms of mumps?

  • fever
  • headache
  • restlessness
  • a decrease in appetite
  • muscular ache

Is there a treatment for mumps?

Mumps can't be cured; only supportive care is available:

  • bed rest
  • plenty of fluids
  • lowering the fever
