What is the Keto Diet?
Low-carb diets are often referred to as "ketogenic" (similar to the Atkins diet). The goal is to consume more healthy fats and fewer carbohydrates. Simple carbs that are easy to digest, such as sugar, soda, pastries, and white bread, should be minimized the most.
How it Works
Consuming fewer than 50 grams of carbohydrates per day causes your body to run out of its primary fuel, blood sugar (glucose). This process typically takes 3 to 4 days. After that, your body begins to break down fat and protein for energy. This metabolic state is known as ketosis, which can lead to weight loss.
Who Should Use the Keto Diet?
Ketogenic diets are most often used for weight loss, but they are also used medically to treat conditions like epilepsy. Further studies are examining whether it may benefit those with heart disease, certain brain ailments, and acne. If you have type 1 diabetes or other chronic health conditions, check with your doctor before attempting a ketogenic diet.
