What is genital herpes?

Genital herpes is an infection by the herpes simplex virus (HSV) of the genitals. Because most people have no or minor symptoms, they are unaware that they are infected. Small blisters that break apart to  develop painful ulcers are common symptoms when they appear.

Causes 

• Herpes simplex virus (HSV-1, HSV-2) 

 

Symptoms

  • small blisters that break open to form painful ulcers,
  • flu-like symptoms

 

Complications 

  • aseptic meningitis 
  • increased risk of
