What is chlamydia?

Chlamydia, or a chlamydia infection, is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacterium chlamydia trachomatis (C. trachomatis). 

 

What are the symptoms of chlamydia?

  • in women:
    • abnormal discharge from the vagina
    • urinating causes a burning sensation
  • in men:
    • discharge from the genital area.
    • urinating with burning sensation.
    • swollen or tender of one or both testicles with pain.

What causes chlamydia?

Chlamydia infections spread because of sexual contact when vaginal fluid or sperm with the bacteria that cause chlamydia passes from one person to another. It may spread via childbirth as well.

 

How can one protect from chlamydia?

This can be prevented by making safer sex practises a habit:

  • use contraceptions during sexual intercourse.
  • sex with only one non–infected person.
  • avoid sharing sex toys.
