What is lexicon?

Human languages roughly comprise two parts: lexicon and grammar. A lexicon refers to the vocabulary of a language, shows how words are put together and arranged in sentences to communicate effectively. 

It is the dictionary of a language or a branch of knowledge, meaning that all the words used by an individual or a group of individuals when speaking a language comprise a lexicon, e.g. the lexicon of the English language.

Any group of people that has a specific set of words they use to communicate has a lexicon

The lexicon contains information about words, their meaning, and their morphological and syntactic properties.

 

In different languages, there are a variety of methods to say hello. Bonjour in French, Caio in Italian, Hola in Spanish, Shalom in Hebrew.These words are part of the vocabulary or lexicon of these languages.
